Eggplant which is a tender perennial plant requires a warm climate for its growth. It is also known as guinea squash. It has many health benefits as it contains antioxidants, fiber,vitaminB6, vitamin C, and potassium. Eggplant is a very tasty vegetable that is added to many cuisines. Here are simple steps that can help you to grow eggplants in your backyard garden. 

Steps to grow the eggplant. 

  • Use good quality seeds that have a high germination rate.
  • Use a large container minimum of 14 inches in diameter, and the potting mix that you are going to use should have high drainage and high porosity. you can also sow the seeds into a seedling tray. 
  • You can also sow your seeds into the starting mix of vermiculture, coco peat, and compost.
  • Once you sow the seeds, in just a few days you will see that the seedling will emerge out of the soil. 
  • Once they reach the size of about two to three inch start to thin the seedling.

How to thin the seedling plant?

You just have to remove the weeker looking plant with help of scissors or you just have to pull them out. This will allow the other plant to grow very well, and not compete for light and nutrients. 

  • Leave them to grow naturally. 
  • Once the flowers appear on the plant, hand pollinate them, to get a bigger yield. 
  • Place the plant in a sunny spot as they need a lot of suns.
  • Prune the little stems that are growing from the sides of the plant as it’s important to prune them. it ensures that the plant grows well.  

When to fertilize the eggplant?

you can add fertilizers once the plant starts flowering, and once after about two months after that. The reason behind this is that you need to constantly feed your plants to make sure that they grow well, you can either use a liquid fertilizer or you can use organic fertilizer, that you can spray at the base of your plant, or you can use a soil-based fertilizer. 

When to harvest them?

It is very important to know when to harvest eggplant. Harvest the eggplant when they are small and tender.
